I went to the store with the intention of buying something different but wanted a set that would bring back some of my old distances I used to hit before going to a forged set with stiffer shafts. Then tried it on the range. The two white lines on the bottom two grooves are classic Callaway and make lining up the club easier. At address it sat very well and had the classic Callaway look, if you know what I mean. However this came in a hollow, closed cavity design that was on the bootylicious side.

My previous driver Ping G10 was good when hit out the right spot, but the Callaway XR is so tolerant of off-centre hits.
After a back injury at work I stopped playing golf for 8 years but recently got back into golf with a set of Srixon irons. These two features work together to simultaneously increase the ball speed, the forgiveness and the MOI to make the XR irons longer and just the best thing, like, ever, as callasay teenage daughter says.
The only draw back is that I need a gap wedge as these go to far. The trick is to balance feel and forgiveness and usually it is in the short irons where this all falls down, but with the Callaway XR Pro the wedge was excellent for a semi cavity back. Callzway Cup is a single piece of thin metal for the face that wraps around at the top and the bottom and then is attached to the rest of the calllaway by a thin piece of metal.
For some time the goal in distance irons has been to bring the technologies from woods into irons to increase distance and forgiveness by using a flexing face with a deep centre of gravity. What is new with the XR irons is that they have managed to do this within the framework of what looks like a classic Callaway distance iron with a visible cavity in clalaway back, which is no mean feat given the narrow sole width they have to work with.
I found the videos and reviews on the site extremely helpful calaway choosing the clubs, and all in all I’m a very happy customer. I own 6 drivers all made in the past 5 years. Callawy shafts are more expensive and you’ll see this reflected in the RRP displayed. I have more control on the shorter irons and the distance they provide is getting my gir percentage up dramatically. I don’t play enough to justify buying a new set but I didn’t want old battered clubs.
I have tried newer irons and have not loved any other yet I’m looking as I want to play a cool iron that is comparable. Start swinging the XR irons callasay you immediately feel the benefit of the speed features as there is almost a slingshot feel at impact from the lovely large heads.
I tried the newer versions of my set of Pings.
But the main difference is the consistency, it was hard to hit a bad one! Unlike the last few drivers Callaway has released, the XR has no gravity core, no moveable weights or any other Centre of Gravity CG moving technology.
Other than that it’s a great iron. Not only did I win I smashed it! And what struck me was the XR performance.

Retail Partners Click For Price. Topline maybe a bit thicker than I’d wish it, but I guess that’s life when playing game improvement irons.
This is a really good shaft and I was pleased to see a nice dark finish to it as well. Fantastic, can’t compliment enough.
I could not believe the numbers. It actually feels like a forged one. Been playing these irons for almost a year now. This allows the face to flex at impact and increase the ball speed xd2 you get more distance, just like they do in the excellent Callaway XR Driver and Callaway XR Fairway. Great distance, goes x2 you want it to go.

I have always said that there are many blades that “feel” better than these babies, the difference is that the forgiveness that the XR Pro’s provide get you in the zone where “yes a good blade will feel better IF struck spot on, the XR Pro will be far easier to hit spot on and will feel -in average- much better than a blade, and render better results”. During a launch briefing from Callaway I was shown video of the speed step moving through one of these wind chambers and the pattern of air flow changed markedly, particularly over the toe section of the crown.
Then tried it on the range.
